Italian Grand Tour Part 10 - La Spezia

La Spezia is a big harbour city in Liguria, an ideal starting point to explore Cinque Terre.

La Spezia to duże, portowe miasto w Ligurii, stanowiące doskonałą bazę wypadową do zwiedzania Cinque Terre.

One of the city's main sights is the Castle of Saint George built in the 13th century. There is a small museum here but it is mainly worth visiting because of the wonderful panoramic views stretching from rooftop terraces.

Jednym z głównych zabytków miasta jest Zamek Św. Jerzego pochodzący z XIII wieku. Znajduje się tu niewielkie muzeum, jednak warto odwiedzić to miejsce głównie ze względu na wspaniałe panoramiczne widoki rozciągające się z tarasów na dachu.

You can see the whole of La Spezia from here with the beautiful harbour and hills in the distance.

Stąd można podziwiać całą La Spezię oraz piękny port, aż po wzgórza na horyzoncie.

The harbour is an important landmark. There are many restricted military zones here with big war ships, but there are also many places accessible to tourists. I found it very interesting to see such great variety of fishing boats, sailing boats and luxurious yachts.

Port jest ważną atrakcją. Znajduje się tu wiele niedostępnych stref wojskowych, gdzie umieszczone są statki wojenne, jednak jest też wiele miejsc dozwolonych dla turystów. Bardzo interesujące było dla mnie zobaczenie tak bardzo różnorodnych statków rybackich, żaglówek czy luksusowych jachtów.

La Spezia's harbour has an interesting story. During the Second World War it was the place of escape for over 23,000 Jews who fled to Palestine. It is therefore often called the Gateway to Zion.

Port w La Spezii ma ciekawą historię. Podczas drugiej wojny światowej posłużył jako miejsce ucieczki ponad 23 tysiącom Żydów, którzy stąd udali się do Palestyny. Dlatego często nazywany jest Wrotami do Syjonu.

Among many impressive churches, I really liked the Church of Our Lady of the Snow, maybe partially because of its mysterious name. Its construction dates back to the 19th century. Inside the temple there is the miraculous painting of Madonna. During heavy bombings in the war, the entire Via Garibaldi was ruined, however, the church remained untouched.

Spośród wielu wspaniałych kościołów, mi najbardziej spodobał się Kościół Matki Boskiej Śnieżnej, może po części ze względu na swoją tajemniczą nazwę. Budowę świątyni rozpoczęto w XIX wieku.

Wewnątrz znajduje się cudowny obraz Madonny. Podczas bombardowań w czasie wojny, cała Via Garibaldi została praktycznie zrównana z ziemią, jednak kościół ten pozostał nienaruszony.

At first glance, La Spezia may not seem very attractive from a tourist's point of view - it is big, loud, a little industrial. But I really liked it. I found it especially interesting because of its eclectic architecture - a true mixture of styles: medieval castle, baroque churches and art nouveau town houses.

Na pierwszy rzut oka La Spezia może nie wydawać się bardzo atrakcyjna z turystycznego punktu widzenia, jest duża, głośna, trochę przemysłowa. Jednak mi bardzo przypadła do gustu. Szczególnie zainteresowała mnie jej eklektyczna architektura, isnta mieszanka stylów - średniowieczny zamek, barokowe kościoły, secesyjne kamienice.

There are many peaceful places in the city  - beautiful fountains and public gardens with  flowers and orange trees.

W mieście łatwo można znaleźć spokojne miejsca - piękne fontanny oraz publiczne ogrody z kwiatami i drzewkami pomarańczowymi.
