A Day Out In... Frombork

Picturesque Frombork located by the Vistula Lagoon, is also called 'The Pearl of Varmia' or 'Copernicus' Castle'. It is here where Nicolaus Copernicus spent a significant part of his adult life, making discoveries. It is a lovely little town offering richness of history, architecture and nature.

The Cathedral Hill - the heart of the city - is surrounded by 10 m thick defensive walls and within them, there are among others, the majestic gothic Cathedral, Copernicus Tower and Radziejowski Tower as well as the Bishop's Palace.

Malowniczy Frombork położony nad Zalewem Wiślanym, zwany jest również 'Perłą Warmii' lub 'Grodem Kopernika'. To tu Mikołaj Kopernik spędził znaczną część swojego dorosłego życia dokonując odkryć. Jest to piękne, małe miasteczko oferujące wielkie bogactwo historii, architektury oraz przyrody.

Wzgórze Katedralne będące sercem miasta, otoczone jest murem obronnym o wysokości 10 metrów, a w jego obrębie znajdują się m.in. majestatyczna gotycka Katedra, Wieża Kopernika i Wieża Radziejowskiego oraz Pałac Biskupi.

The 14th century Cathedral hides a magnificent altar and crucifix, tombstones, decorative sculptures and paintings, as well as the grave of Nicolaus Copernicus, whose remains were found in 2005.

Katedra z XIV wieku skrywa w swym wnętrzu wspaniały ołtarz oraz krucyfiks, płyty nagrobne, dekoracyjne rzeźby i obrazy, jak również grób Mikołaja Kopernika, którego szczątki odnaleziono w 2005 roku.

The Cathedral's interior lost its gothic character and the decor is mainly early baroque.

Wnętrze Katedry zatraciło swój gotycki charakter, a wystrój jest przeważnie wczesnobarokowy.

Star and rib vaults decorate the temple's ceiling.

Sklepnienia gwiaździste i żebrowe ozdabiają sufit świątyni.

The opulence of the 16 side altars from the 17th century can make your head spin. They are all adorned with precious sculptures and paintings, example of which is the St. Thomas altar below.

O prawdziwy zawrót głowy może przyprawić bogactwo aż 16 ołtarzy bocznych z XVII wieku. Wszystkie ozdobione są cennymi rzeźbami i obrazami, tak jak na przykład ołtarz Św. Tomasza na zdjęciu poniżej.

The main altar (picture above) from the years 1748-1750 is made of black, pink and white marble according to the project by Francesco Placidi.

On both sides of the room there are post-baroque stalls with canopy. 

Ołtarz główny (zdjęcie powyżej) z lat 1748-1750 wykonany jest z czarnego, różówego i białego marmuru według projektu Franciszka Placidiego. 

Po obu stronach pomieszczenia znajdują się późnobarokowe stalle z baldachimem.

I most liked the St. Michael Archangel altar from 1640 and within it a beautiful painting by A. Wysocki from 1877 (picture below).

Najbardziej podobał mi się ołtarz Św. Michała Archanioła z 1640 roku, a w nim przepiękny obraz namalowany dopiero w 1877 przez A. Wysockiego (zdjęcie poniżej).

Epitaphs and tombstones come from the times of Gothic as well as Renaissance and Baroque.

Epitafia i płyty nagrobkowe pochodzą zarówno z czasu gotyku, jak i renesansu i baroku.

The Cathedral's interior is also decorated by the majestic organs from 1684.

Wnętrze Katedry zdobią też majestatyczne organy z 1684 roku.

These solid doors lead to the Saviour's Chapel raised in the years 1732-1735. Prayers said in the chapel were supposed to protect the region of Varmia. There are some relics here, among others of Saint Theodore from Amaseia.

The chapel is covered by a dome and on it, you can see paintings depicting the Adoration of the Holy Trinity.

Te masywne zdobione drzwi prowadzą do Kaplicy Zbawiciela wzniesionej w latach 1732-1735. Modlitwy odmawiane w kaplicy miały za zadanie obronę Warmii. Znajdują się tu między innymi relikwie Świętego Teodora z Amasei.

Kaplica przykryta jest kopułą, a na niej widnieją malowidła przedstawiające Adorację Św. Trójcy.

The Copernicus' Tower (picture above) served the famous astronomer as his official apartment.

In the past, the Radziejowski Tower located opposite (picture below) played the role of a lighthouse, a bell tower and of an observation point. 227 steps lead to its top and on each floor you can see seasonal exhibitions.

Wieża Kopernika (zdjęcie powyżej) służyła sławnemu astronomowi za formalne mieszkanie.

Znajdująca się naprzeciwko Wieża Radziejowskiego (zdjęcie poniżej) pełniła w przeszłości funkcję latarni morskiej, dzwonnicy oraz punktu obserwacyjnego. Na jej szczyt prowadzi 227 schodów, a na piętrach zobaczyć można sezonowe wystawy.

In the tower, attached on the height of almost 30 metres, there is the Foucault Pendulum, confirming Copernicus' heliocentric theory.

We wieży znajduje się także Wahadło Foucaulta umocowane na wysokości prawie 30 metrów i potwierdzające heliocentryczną teorię Kopernika.

Beautiful views of Frombork and the Vistula Lagoon stretch out from the tower.

Z wieży rozciągają się piękne widoki na Frombork oraz Zalew Wiślany.

Near the Cathedral Hill there is the Copernicus Monument facing the Vistula Lagoon. You can sit and have a coffee at the Galeria Cafe, visit a shop with ceramics and souvenirs as well as have a walk among the tall trees.

Przy Wzgórzu Katedralnym znajduje się Pomnik Kopernika zwrócony w stronę Zalewu Wiślanego. Można tu usiąść na kawę w kawiarni Galeria Cafe, zajść do sklepu z ceramiką i upominkami oraz przejść się wśród wysokich drzew.

The Copernicus House serves traditional Varmian lunches.

Dom Kopernika serwuje tradycyjne warmińskie obiady.

In the building of the Bishop's Palace there is the Nicolaus Copernicus Museum.

W budynku Pałacu Biskupiego znajduje się Muzeum Mikołaja Kopernika.

Copernicus was most possibly a cat lover. While examining the astronomer's DNA, a genetic material of two cats was also discovered - of a grey and ginger one. Hence the amusing figurines depicting these animals, which can be found across the town.

Kopernik był najprawdopodobniej miłośnikiem kotów. Przy badaniu DNA astronoma odkryto również materiał genetyczny dwóch kotów - szarego i rudego. Stąd zabawne figurki tych zwierzątek, które rozmieszczono w mieście.

In the area of the Copernicus Canal there are some restaurants and ice-cream shops. The canal leads to a small, picturesque port.

W okolicy Kanału Kopernika znajdują się restauracje oraz lodziarnie. Kanał prowadzi do niewielkiego, malowniczego portu.
