Ireland Part 1: The Emerald Island

Ireland - windy, rainy and sunny all at the same time. Green fields, rainbows, sheep and cows, gloomy castles, cute villages and spectacular views. Beautiful and unspoilt wild nature.

The Emerald Island has everything to satisfy the soul of a wanderer.

I travelled here from Dublin and explored a tiny, but very exciting part of the Wild Atlantic Way.

Irlandia - wietrzna, deszczowa i słoneczna, wszystko na raz. Zielone pola, tęcze, owce i krowy, ponure zamczyska, śliczne wioski i spektakularne widoki. Piękna i dziewicza dzika przyroda. Szmaragdowa Wyspa ma wszystko aby zadowolić duszę wędrowcy.

Przybyłam tu z Dublina i odkryłam malutki, ale bardzo ekscytujący odcinek dzikiej drogi Atlantyckiej.

The Cliffs of Moher, located on the west coast of Ireland in Clare county, are a real natural miracle. Built of sandstone and limestone, they reach the height of even over 200 metres. Despite rough landscape, they are home to many bird species. The Cliffs of Moher are wild, romantic and beautiful and their peaks reveal a stunning view of the Atlantic. It is very windy here and the air is filled with water droplets coming from the waves crashing on the rocks.

Klify Moheru, położone na zachodnim wybrzeżu Irlandii w hrabstwie Clare, to prawdziwy cud natury. Zbudowane z wapieni i piaskowców, w najwyższym miejscu osiągają nawet ponad 200 metrów. Pomimo surowo wyglądającego krajobrazu, żyje tu mnóstwo różnych gatunków ptaków. Klify Moheru są dzikie, romantyczne i piękne, a z ich szczytów roztacza się niesamowity widok na Atlantyk. Na klifach jest bardzo wietrznie, a w powietrzu unoszą się kropelki wody pochodzące z rozbijających się o skały fal. 

The part of the cliffs protected by the tourist centre is surrounded by a stone wall. Beyond that it gets quite dangerous - nevertheless many tourists step on to the unguarded path. I prefer not to - I have far too much respect for the power of nature to do that. 

Część klifów objęta opieką centrum turystycznego jest ogrodzona kamiennym murem. Poza nim robi się już bardzo niebezpiecznie, mimo tego wielu turystów wchodzi na niestrzeżoną trasę. Ja wolę tego nie robić - mam zbyt duży szacunek wobec sił natury.

The 19th century O'Brien's tower stands proudly on the top of the cliffs.

Also in the Clare county is the fantastical Burren (Irish for "great rock") - the moon-like landscape made up of karst limestone. It is a rough and wild part of Ireland, formed by the forces of nature for thousands of years. The plateau stretches over 260 square km and is mostly uninhabited by people.

Również w hrabstwie Clare znajduje się niezwykły Burren (z irlandzkiego "skalista ziemia") - księżycowy krajobraz zbudowany z wapieni krasowych. Jest to surowa i dzika część Irlandii, formowana przez siły natury przez tysiące lat. Płaskowyż rozciąga się na obszarze ponad 260 kilometrów kwadratowych i jest w większości niezamieszkany przez ludzi.

The mini-cliffs may seem like nothing compared to the giant Cliffs of Moher, but the Burren made a bigger impression on me. Maybe it is for the eerie landscape that made me feel as if on the surface of a different planet. I could connect with the place's incredible peacefulness and unrestricted wilderness at the same time. What also fascinated me was the fact that, due to its unusual environment and climate, the region supports arctic, Mediterranean and alpine vegetation side-by-side. 

Mini-klify mogą wydawać się niczym w obliczu gigantycznych klifów Moheru, jednak na mnie Burren wywarł większe wrażenie. Być może dlatego, że ten dziwaczny krajobraz sprawił, że poczułam się jak na powierzchni innej planety. Przemówiły do mnie zarówno niezwykły spokój, jak i niczym nieskrępowana dzikość natury. Fascynujące było dla mnie również to, że dzięki swemu niezwykłemu klimatowi, region ten podtrzymuje wegetację arktyczną, śródziemnomorską i alpejską jednocześnie.
