Pena Palace and Gardens

Only 40 minutes by train from Lisbon you can reach Sintra - a town of fairy tale castles and beautiful views. One of Portugal's many jewels is located here - Palace da Pena. The colourful and wonderfully unique building sits on the height of 500 metres, on one of the peaks of Sintra's mountain range.

Ta kolorowa i cudownie niepowtarzalna budowla wznosi się na wysokości 500 metrów, na jednym ze szczytów gór Serra de Sintra.

The Palace is Portugal's finest example of Romanticist architecture and was commissioned to be build by King Ferdinand II on the ruins of a former monastery.

Pałac jest najświetniejszym przykładem portugalskiej architektury epoki Romantyzmu. Został zbudowany na polecenie króla Ferdynanda II, na ruinach dawnego klasztoru.

It is best to arrive here as early as possible - the line to see the Palace's interior can get really long.

Najlepiej przybyć tu jak najwcześniej - kolejka do zobaczenia pałacowych wnętrz może być bardzo długa.

Beautiful views can be admired from many terraces. The most interesting is the Terrace of the Triton. Strong, cold winds blow here and I couldn't help but imagine it to be an old form of air-conditioning.

Piękne widoki można podziwiać z licznych tarasów, z których jednym z ciekawszych jest Taras Trytona. Wieje tu silny, zimny wiatr - pomyślałam, że miejsce to może być przykładem dawnej formy klimatyzacji.

The views are simply magnificent. On the horizon you can see the blue of the ocean.

Widoki są po prostu wspaniałe. Na horyzoncie widać błękit oceanu.

Around stretches a vast forested ground, green and wild, hiding many secret gems - romantic bridges, mysterious caves and charming fountains. The garden spreads out over 200 hectares, the air here is brisk and fresh - it is a perfect place for walking and hiking. One of my favourite spots was the picturesque Valley of the Lakes.  

Dookoła rozciąga się wielki, zalesiony teren, zielony i dziki, skrywający wiele sekretnych skarbów - romantyczne mosty, tajemnicze jaskinie i urokliwe fontanny. Ogród obejmuje ponad 200 hektarów, powietrze jest tu rześkie i świeże - jest to idealne miejsce na piesze wędrówki. Jednym z moich ulubionych miejsc była malownicza Dolina Jezior.

"The whole mountain road is a garden, a wonderful combination of nature and art, the most beautiful walk you can imagine", wrote Hans Christian Andersen in 1866, after paying a visit to the park in Sintra.
