A Visit to Harewood House

 Only thirty minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Leeds, there is the enchanting historic home - the Harewood House. It is a place for history, arts and crafts, for natural beauty and relaxation. 

Tylko trzydzieści minut drogi z tętniącego życiem Leeds znajduje się czarująca historyczna posiadłość - Harewood House. Jest to miejsce historii, sztuki i rękodzieła, naturalnego piękna oraz odpoczynku.

The house was built in the 18th century and its First Baron Harewood - Edwin Lescalles - was a merchant who infamously came to riches through the slave trade. Up to this day the house belongs to the Lescalles family and is a member of the Treasure Houses of England. One of its most known residents was Princess Mary.

Dom zbudowano w XVIII wieku, a jego pierwszym baronem był Edwin Lescalles - kupiec okryty złą sławą, który wzbogacił się na handlu niewolnikami. Do dziś rezydencja należy do rodziny Lescalles i wpisana jest na listę Treasure Houses - domów 'skarbnic' Anglii. Do najbardziej znanych mieszkańców posiadłości należała księżniczka Mary.

From the Terrace you can see one of the most beautiful Victorian formal gardens in England. It is very symmetrical, with stone statues and fountains. In the centre there is 'Orpheus' - a bronze figure added to the garden in 1984.

The natural surrounding is stunning - long grass resembling sea waves in the wind, a lake and woodlands, red kites flying above.

The cafe serves sandwiches, cakes and scones.

You can explore the grand state rooms, as well as 'servants quarters' downstairs. 

The interiors are spectacular with bright colours, works of art and decorative ceilings and chandeliers.

Harewood House is a also home to different exhibitions, for example the Create/Elevate project - presenting the work of British and international artists, designers and craft collectives.

There are some enchanting gardens here as well, for example the Himalayan Garden with a buddhist stupa, which was erected in 2004 by the monks from Bhutan.
