Leeds City Centre

 Leeds, one of England's biggest cities, has undergone a massive redevelopment and transformation. It is an innovative, vibrant and friendly place to visit and a wonderful base for anyone wanting to explore Yorkshire.

I was highly impressed by its unique architecture and the amazing mixture, which the modern glass buildings and those from Victorian and industrial eras create together.

Leeds, jedno z największych miast w Anglii, przeszło ogromną renowację i transformację. Jest to destynacja innowacyjna, pełna życia, przyjazna, a jednocześnie posłużyć może za doskonałą bazę do zwiedzania Yorkshire.

Byłam pod wrażeniem charakterystycznej architektury oraz niezwykłego połączenia szklanych nowoczesnych budynków z tymi z epoki wiktoriańskiej i przemysłowej.

Leeds Art Gallery is home to modern and contemporary British art. It is also here where you can find one of Leeds' hidden gems - the Tiled Cafe.

Leeds Art Gallery jest domem współczesnej sztuki brytyjskiej. Tu znaleźć można również jeden z ukrytych skarbów Leeds - kawiarnię Tiled Cafe (tile - kafelek).

Officially opened in 1884, this incredible Italian style hall first served as the main reading room in Leeds' library. Vaulted ceiling, colourful mosaics, marble columns and parquet flooring - it all makes the interior simply stunning. On the walls there are also portraits of literary figures like Homer, Milton or Burns.

Oficjalnie otwarty w 1884 roku, ten niezwykły hol w stylu włoskim, służył jako główna czytelnia biblioteki w Leeds. Sklepienia na suficie, kolorowe mozaiki, marmurowe kolumny oraz drewniany parkiet - to wszystko czyni wnętrze pięknym. Na ścianach widnieją portrety pisarzy i poetów takich jak Homer, Milton czy Burns.

Before the huge American-style shopping malls there were shopping arcades and some of the most beautiful examples are located in Leeds.

The Corn Exchange was built in 1864 and is now a shopping mall, but not an ordinary one! It is a living landmark of Leeds and home to independent shops, boutiques and a cafe. It is definitely one of the most interesting interiors in Leeds.

Budynek Corn Exchange (przeładownia zboża) zbudowany w 1864 roku jest teraz centrum handlowym, ale nie zwyczajnym! Jest to ważny punkt na mapie Leeds oraz dom dla niezależnych sklepików, butików oraz kawiarni. Jest to napewno jedno z najbardziej interesujących wnętrz w Leeds.

Another gem worth seeing is the Saint Paul's House located in the heart of Leeds' commercial district. It was built in 1878 as a warehouse and is now a business centre. What makes it unique is the Hispano-Moorish style which brings to mind buildings like the Alhambra in Spain.

Kolejnym klejnotem wartym zobaczenia jest Saint Paul's House mieszczący się w sercu dzielnicy finansowej Leeds. Zbudowano go w 1878 roku jako magazyn, a teraz jest to centrum biznesowe. Styl Hispano-Moorish przywodzi na myśl budowle takie jak Alhambra w Hiszpanii.

Nearby the entrance to the Kirkgate Market there are lovely murals made of mosaic, like the Rainbow of Hope and clouds with a sun. All mosaics bring messages of hope and optimism.
