Boninovo Cemetery in Dubrovnik

There is a beautiful old cemetery surrounded by a wall in the district of Boninovo. Most tombs are Roman Catholic, but there are also Jewish, Muslim and Orthodox graves here. Many of them are dating from as early as the 19th century. I was in awe of the magnificent monuments depicting angels and flowers but also skeletons and skulls. It is a place filled with peace and reflection. In a separated part of the cemetery are the graves of the Dubrovnik Defenders, fallen in the 90s during the siege of the city by the Serbian army.

W dzielnicy Boninovo znajduje się piękny, otoczony murem stary cmentarz. Znajdują się tu głównie groby wyznawców religii rzymskokatolickiej, ale również żydowskiej, muzułmańskiej oraz prawosławnej. Wiele grobów pochodzi jeszcze z XIX wieku. Zachwyciły mnie wspaniałe pomniki przedstawiające anioły i kwiaty, ale także szkielety i trupie czaszki. Jest to miejsce pełne spokoju i zadumy. W wydzielonej części cmentarza pochowani są obrońcy Dubrownika, polegli w latach 90. podczas oblężenia miasta przez serbskie wojska.
