Having travelled in Scotland quite extensively I left Glasgow to the very last. Not expecting too much and even worried it may not live up to Edinburgh's standard I was pleasantly surprised and I can honestly say that Glasgow is one of the most fascinating cities I have seen.

It is exciting, interesting and full of life!

Podróżując dość intensywnie po Szkocji pozostawiłam Glasgow na koniec. Nie oczekując zbyt wiele, a nawet martwiąc się, że miasto nie dorówna standardom Edynburga byłam bardzo przyjemnie zaskoczona i z ręką na sercu mogę powiedzieć, że Glasgow jest jednym z najbardziej fascynujących miast jakie widziałam.

Jest ekscytujące, ciekawe i pełne życia!

The Merchant City is one of Glasgow's oldest and most stylish districts, with cafes and shops, as well as beautiful buildings such as the GoMA - Gallery of Modern Art.

In front of the gallery there is the Statue of Duke Wellington. What is unusual and amusing is the fact that the statue is capped with a cone. Apparently the tradition started in the 80s and represents the Glaswegians' sense of humour.

Merchant City to jedna z najstarszych i najelegantszych dzielnic Glasgow, pełna kawiarni i sklepów oraz pięknych budynków, takich jak GoMA - Galeria Sztuki Współczesnej.

Na przeciwko galerii stoi posąg księcia Wellington. Niezwykłą i zabawną rzeczą jest to, że posąg ma na głowie pachołek drogowy. Tradycja ta sięga podobno lat 80-tych i reprezentuje poczucie humoru mieszkańców Glasgow.

The city has an incredible Art Noveau architecture, distinctively decorative, also described simply as 'Glasgow Style'.

Miasto ma niezwykłą architekturę w stylu Art Noveau, charakterystycznie dekoracyjną, określaną również po prostu jako 'Glasgow Style".

Another gem are the Willow Tea Rooms in Buchanan Street, opened in 1901-1903 by Kate Cranston, a daughter of a tea merchant. The place is not only known for its excellent selection of teas but also and mainly for its Art Deco interiors designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Especially interesting are the characteristic high-back wooden chairs and stained glass windows.

Kolejnym klejnotem jest herbaciarnia Willow Tea Rooms na ulicy Buchanan, otwarta w latach 1901-1903 przez Kate Cranston, córkę handlarza herbatą. Miejsce to jest znane nie tylko z wspaniałego wyboru herbat, ale również i przede wszystkim, z wnętrz w stylu Art Deco, zaprojektowanych przez Charles'a Rennie Mackintosha. Szczególnie ciekawe są charakterystyczne drewniane krzesła z wysokim oparciem oraz witraże.

The City Chambers completed in 1888 and overlooking George Square is one of Glasgow's most prestigious buildings.

The entry is free and twice daily there is a guided tour.

What is especially impressive is the magnificent marble staircase which is said to be built with more marble than there is in the Vatican.

A fun fact is that Glasgow has the tallest cinema building in the world.

Glasgow Central Station is a beautiful construction opened in 1879.

An example of gothic architecture is the Cathedral - the oldest building in Glasgow, dedicated to the city's patron saint St. Mungo.

On a low hill next to the Cathedral lies the Victorian cemetery called the Glasgow Necropolis. Founded in 1831 and modeled on Pere-Lachaise in Paris, it is full of majestic tombstones and has a unique quiet atmosphere.
