Lombary Part 1 - Bergamo

I started my Lombardian adventure in the charming town of Bergamo, located only 30 kilometers from the spectacular Lake Como. I arrived at 9 o'clock in the morning and in the burning sun it felt like late afternoon. The town consists of two parts - citta alta (upper city) and citta bassa (lower city). The upper city is the older, medieval part surrounded by Venetian walls. The lower city is more modern. Both are easily accessible via footpaths or the cable car (funiculare).

Swoją Lombardzką przygodę rozpoczęłam w czarującym mieście Bergamo, położonym zaledwie 30 kilometrów od zjawiskowego jeziora Como. Dotarłam o 9 rano, a palące słońce sprawiało, że czułam się tak, jakby było późne popołudnie. Miasto składa się z dwóch części - citta alta (wyższe miasto) oraz citta bassa (niższe miasto). Wyższe miasto jest częścią starszą - średniowieczną, otoczoną murami weneckimi. Niższe miasto jest bardziej nowoczesne. Oba są łatwo dostępne dzięki szlakom i kolejce linowej (funiculare).

I took the cable car to San Vigilio hill from where I could admire the wonderful views of the upper city.

Kolejką pojechałam na wzgórze San Vigilio, skąd mogłam podziwiać wspaniałe widoki na wyższe miasto.

Near the main square (Piazza Vecchia) is the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. Its construction began in 1137 and continued right until the 15th century. The interior is breathtaking and every inch is covered with ornaments and paintings.

Niedaleko głównego placu (Piazza Vecchia), znajduje się Bazylika Santa Maria Maggiore, której budowa rozpoczęła się w 1137 roku i trwała aż do XV wieku. Wnętrze zapiera dech w piersiach, a każdy jego fragment pokryty jest zdobieniami i malowidłami. 

At Piazza Vecchia 3 there is Bergamo's historical Caffe del Tasso, established in 1476. It is a lovely place for an afternoon coffee or lunch, right in the heart of the old town.

Bergamo is surrounded by beautiful vistas - magnificent mountains (Bergamasque Alps), charming villas, fruit trees and huge oleanders. In the distance I could see goats grazing on grass.

Bergamo otaczają piękne krajobrazy - wspaniałe góry (Alpy Bergamskie), urokliwe wille oraz drzewka owocowe i ogromne oleandry. W oddali dostrzegłam pasące się na trawie kozy.

The sound of cicadas was overwhelming - it was the first time in my life I could hear them this loud.

Po raz pierwszy w życiu słyszałam tak głośne dźwięki wydawane przez cykady.
