In the Land of Fairytales

My sister and I went on a road trip to the Harz Mountains - the land of many German fairytales. As we travelled, the landscape was slowly changing and suddenly the flat fields of the North gave way to forests and hills, then turning into mountains. We stayed in Wernigerode, a picturesque gem of a town with cobbled streets and marzipan-like houses (my friend Franco came up with this analogy - it fits perfectly!). A mysterious castle is overlooking the area from a green hill and seeing it all the time, from every corner of the town gave me the impression of travelling back in time.

Z siostrą wybrałyśmy się w podróż do Harz - górskiej krainy wielu niemieckich baśni. W czasie podróży krajobraz powoli się zmieniał, a nagle płaskie pola północy ustąpiły miejsca lasom i wzgórzom, następnie przechodząc w góry. Zatrzymałyśmy się w Wernigerode, ślicznym miasteczku-klejnociku z brukowanymi uliczkami i domkami jak z marcepanu (to porównanie wymyślił mój przyjaciel Franco - bardzo pasuje!). Z zielonego wzgórza spogląda w dół tajemniczy zamek. Jest widoczny z każdego zakątka w mieście i patrząc na niego miałam wrażenie, że przenoszę się w zamierzchłe czasy.

We loved our dreamy window view very much. The medieval castle was built in the 12th century and became the seat of the Counts of Stolberg. The communist government took hold of it in 1945 and kept it under its control right until the end of regime. Now it serves as a museum and provides magnificent views. 

Bardzo podobał nam się nasz bajkowy widok z okna. Średniowieczny zamek powstał w XII wieku i stał się siedzibą hrabiów Stolberg. Komunistyczny rząd przejął go w 1945 i pozostał on w jego posiadaniu aż do upadku reżimu. Teraz służy jako muzeum i dostarcza wspaniałych widoków.

We wandered around the gorgeous old town. The main building here is the impressive 16th century Town Hall. There are many cafes and boutiques here. I was happy to see a vegan store.

Spacerowałyśmy po starówce. Głównym budynkiem jest tu imponujący, XVI-wieczny ratusz. Znajduje się tu wiele kawiarni i butików. Ucieszył mnie widok wegańskiego sklepu.

We went up the castle from where we could marvel at the enchanting landscape. In the distance, we could see The Brocken - Harz's highest summit, which features in many German legends and is mentioned by Goethe in "Faust".

Wybrałyśmy się na zamek - stąd mogłyśmy podziwiać czarujący widok. Na horyzoncie widziałyśmy Brocken - najwyższy szczyt gór Harz, obecny w wielu niemieckich legendach oraz wspomniany w "Fauście" przez Goethego.
